The Beast of Bladenboro

While it is not a Sasquatch, The Beast of Bladenboro is still very interesting and I thought it would make a nice addition to the page. I live in North Carolina and can honestly say that I had never heard of the beast until just a few years ago, but I must say that it does have quite a history.

Bladen County North Carolina
During the cold of December in 1953 several dogs were found dead and all were said to be drained of blood. A farmer said that something attacked his dog and dragged it away. While the creature may sound similar to the Chupacabra in its methods, the Beast of Bladenboro has been said to be more of a very large cat-like creature. Soon the news was out, and drawing hunters from miles away to track down what had then been known as a Vampire Beast that had been blamed for the deaths of hundreds of animals ranging from small household pets to livestock.
The bodies of the animals had their throats torn open and seemingly all of the blood had been drained and little to no signs of struggle. Some reports even state that the skulls had been crushed.
Descriptions of the creature say that the animal is roughly three feet in length with a rounded face, solid black and its weight ranging from 90 – 150 pounds. The creature has also been said to make a deep roaring sound, as well as, sounds similar to a baby crying.
After a while the number of people traveling through Bladenboro dropped apparently out of fear of the creature. Residents brought their pets inside to protect them from the vicious attacks, and began carrying weapons with them while outdoors.
So what is it? Some people have said that the beast was simply a bobcat, a cougar and some have even speculated that it was even dogs. Experts have stated that there have been no Cougars in North Carolina for many years and just dismiss the theory altogether. As far as the “large black cat-like creature,” Experts also say that there are no large black cats native to North America.
Still the reports persist in Bladenboro, and throughout the state, of a large black creature that attacks animals and drains them of blood. Ever since I was little I have heard people tell of seeing a “panther” in the mountains and hearing them crying out in the night and have even heard of people telling me that some were black as coal.
An adult cougar will eat around 10 pounds of meat per day and is known to ambush its prey and kill by attacking the neck. However, cougars eat their catches and do not just drain the blood, and only leave the carcass behind buried under a layer of leaves or brush to return to later. Could the beast simply be the signs of the cougar making a return to the state and reclaiming old hunting grounds? Or could it be something entirely different? Could there really be a “vampire beast” stalking through the woods, mountains and swamps of North Carolina?

Swamp Stomped

As we all know a blurry copy of a recent Swamp Loggers episode has been causing quite a stir around the web. Now the 1080i HD video has been released and has delivered some sad news (video wise anyway.) The, now famous, blurry image appears to be quite human.

"How come nobody has found a dead body?"

I have lived in Western North Carolina my entire life. During which, I have spent a great deal in the woods and roaming around the mountains. I know that there are black bears in my area. I have seen a few up close, and plenty of their tracks, but I have to say that I have never came across the dead body of a black bear just lying out in the woods. The woods have their own cleaning crews. Scavengers can reduce a dead body rather quickly, and bones can be dragged away and eaten as well because we all know how much dogs of all species love bones. The marrow within is just too much to resist and has a high nutritional value. So people have seen bears in the area, tracks have been found. However, could I say that there are no bears here based on the fact that I have never came across a dead one?
There are other theories as well. One is the possibility that the Sasquatch bury their dead. Another is that the bodies of the deceased creatures are cannibalized. However I believe scavenges are the most likely.

1940'S - PRESENT: Unusual sounds heard in the southern portion of Henderson county near the state line on Heatherly Heights road. Almost a yearly occurrance. Usually it can be heard mainly at night or early morning. The sound is best described as a loud "scream" that can be clearly heard throughout the valley below. Most recently sounds were heard outside a home on ***** road, only a couple of miles away from where the sounds were reported of a large type animal roaming through the front yard at night. This is still to be looked into and confirmed. However in the surrounding woods large footprints that measured 16 inches were found, as well as a small tree that was bent down and broken. The break was measured at around six feet from the ground. There was nothing in the immediate area that would have fallen and caused the break.
There have been numerous other reports that included a woman coming home from work, who claimed she saw a large black thing "leap" across the road. A woman who said she could hear something very large by her bedroom window at night breathing. There was also a report of a man who had went to his outhouse one night, and while in the outhouse he had said that there was strange sounds coming from outside which scared him so bad that he stayed the night in the outhouse. The next morning his relatives had to "pry" his hands from the handrails to get him out. The exact date of the occurrence is unknown.

SEPTEMBER 1986: Near Carter Mountain, Barnardsville. Report of a man driving up a mountain road. The road turned to dirt, and about 40 feet after leaving the pavement the driver saw what was initially thought to be a bear. The driver got closer and the creature showed no fear of the approaching car. The creature then stood up on it's hind legs.

JULY 15, 1985 Off Highway 11 Near Marietta. 8:30 p.m. High pitched screams were heard for three or four hours. The screams would alternate from high pitched to low. A grapevine around 5 or 7 inches was snapped in two and broken off 8 or 9 feet off of the ground. Footprints were found about 9 - 10 inches long and 2 inches deep. A strong odor "like a goat" was also reported. There were 4 witnesses to this. And also there was an attempt to see what was making the noise. As they shined the light into the woods there was a reflection of red eyes staring back at them.
